Sisters In Spirit (SIS) honours the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada, as well as supporting their families. The Native Women's Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT) hosts the annual vigil in Toronto and is registered with the larger Sisters In Spirit movement organized by the Native Women's Association of Canada. It also provides allies and engaged citizens with an opportunity to learn about this national tragedy and how we can work together to end violence against Indigenous women. The vigil takes place October 4th, 6:30pm-8:30pm in Allan Gardens Park with performances and speakers. All are welcome to attend.
NWRCT does not receive funding for this vigil and it is not used as a fundraising opportunity, therefore there are costs incurred that put a strain on our general funds. Donations are greatly appreciated. This year, we have also included a week of events leading up to the October 4th SIS vigil, that are meant to empower, educate, and most importantly, heal communities. Any donations will be put towards materials, permits (required for the vigil), traditional medicines and promotion of the events and vigil, etc.
