We never thought society would experience a crisis of this magnitude in our lifetime. And yet, here we are. The COVID-19 pandemic has been linked to increased domestic violence reports and crisis calls around the world. None of us are sure what our world will be like when COVID-19 is resolved but we know that Nellie’s will be needed more than ever for the many women and their children facing abuse during this time of isolation.
Measures in place during COVID-19:
Our first priority is the safety and well-being of all residents and our front-line staff. We’ve had to make many adjustments, and our costs have increased substantially to ensure women, children and staff are safe and have access to Personal Protective Equipment. Women and children are screened daily and our shelter is professionally cleaned and sanitized several times a week. Plexiglass barriers have been installed when social distancing is not possible, for example in our reception area and kitchen.
Two extra cooks have been hired to prepare all meals for residents in order to comply with COVID-19 regulations around food safety. While this addresses the issue of increased food safety in the shelter, it has removed an element of normalcy many women felt when making breakfast and lunch for themselves and their kids. We’ve increased our budget for snacks for the children - with no school or outdoor activities our food costs have escalated.
Crisis calls continue to be addressed 24/7. Our housing workers continue to connect with women in the community through telephone and email and where possible staff have been working remotely with limited days in the office.
We know these are incredibly challenging times for all of you. If you have the ability, please consider making a one-time special gift to support the extra costs we face during this pandemic. Or, consider becoming a monthly donor or increasing your monthly gift to support Nellie's in planning programs and activities in advance.
The work we do every day would not be possible without YOU! With the committed support of donors like you, we can continue to provide the vital services that help women and children dream of brighter tomorrows. We're in this together and together we will get through this.
