The ongoing conflict in Syria has triggered one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world today. Niagara United Mennonite Church is in the process of privately sponsoring a family of Syrian refugees who have recently been displaced from Syria and have sought safety in Lebanon. Currently more than 4.5 million Syrians have sought refuge in the neighbouring countries of Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey to avoid the dangerous conflicts in Syria.
Niagara United Mennonite Church has a long standing tradition of supporting refugees from all over the world. The Church was founded in 1938 and many of its original members’ came from Russia and Ukraine as refugees themselves.
This fund will support life-saving assistance and relief efforts for a Syrian family displaced by the violent conflict within Syria. The purpose of the fund will be to:
- Provide the funds necessary to privately sponsor the family of Syrian refugees.
- Facilitate family reunification through the proper legal channels.
- Provide income support to the family upon arrival to Canada.
Donations received in excess of what is needed for the present sponsorship project will be applied to future refugee sponsorships. In the event that Niagara United Mennonite Church chooses to discontinue sponsoring future refugees, remaining funds will be forwarded to Mennonite Central Committee's Refugee Program.
