How you can help furnish and equip the GTA’s newest anti-violence centre
With the generous support of our community, we will create an accessible, welcoming refuge for women and children fleeing violence. Hard construction costs have been generously funded by the federal and provincial governments. We are counting on people like you – who care about the women and children (and their pets) who turn to us for help to give generously so we can furnish and equip our new centre to make it a home offering healing, empowerment and refuge.
44% of women said they delayed leaving their partners because of their animals
Women often choose to stay in unsafe situations rather than leave their pet behind. Thanks to our generous community, the new NYWS will have a purpose-built kennel and pet area, ensuring women with pets don’t have to choose between their own safety and their companion animals.
First of its kind design
Our new, secure, fully accessible 24,000 square foot complex will do much more than provide emergency shelter. We will be the GTA’s only anti-violence shelter designed specifically with children’s needs in mind (60% of our residents are children). This welcoming, evidence-based design is a first for anti-violence shelters in Canada and features two distinct but linked buildings.
An emergency residence with 17 bedrooms and the capacity to house between 30 – 40 women and children – plus a first in the Toronto area – a kennel for their pets.
A community services building offering violence-prevention programming and trauma-specific care and services to support both residents and women from the surrounding community. This means that even women who are unable to enter shelters are able to access services to help keep them safe and exit abusive situations.
I spent four years with a man I loved who hurt me, beat me and let me believe I was worthless. I have scars on my body as a reminder of where I have been, but for once my heart is light and I can see a future for my family.
I owe my life and the lives of my children to the staff at NYWS and to you, the community of people who support the shelter through donations. Without your support and care, I would not have had the strength to carry on. Thank you.
