Ontario Parents Advocating for Children with Cancer (OPACC) continues to provide support to childhood cancer families in Ontario throughout the pandemic by offering virtual support options. Although our Parent Liaisons are not able to be physically present at the hospitals, they are still available to help families via:
- Social media private messages
- Video chats using Facebook Chat, Messenger, Zoom, etc.
We are also still able to offer families some limited financial support through our existing Hospital Parking Program, to help with the inevitable costs of hospital parking.
Childhood cancer families are already an underserved and vulnerable community. Many of the children are immuno-compromised due to their cancer treatment, and the families are feeling particularly isolated and experiencing heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and PTSD at this frightening time.
The pandemic has also created financial difficulties for our charity. We have had to cut staff hours significantly, however, they are still committed and available to help families on reduced hours and for little or no pay in some cases. Our signature fundraising event that funds the Parent Liaison program, the annual OPACC Hearts of Gold charity gala, has had to be rescheduled until next year due out of consideration for the health and economic situation of our attendees.
Please help us continue to support this special group of vulnerable community members that rely on our unique, peer-to-peer support system. To find out more about the support we provide through our Parent Liaison program, please visit: www.opacc.org/parentliaison. Thank you!
