The University of Alberta is hosting the #Unbreakable2019 challenge!

This month-long fitness event organized by University of Alberta medical students and residents is to raise awareness and funds for Osteoporosis Canada.

Sign up and commit to excising to build your muscle and bone strength during the month of February! We’ll send you a handout to guide your exercise level and goal-setting.

Seek pledges from friends and family to support osteoporosis prevention and awareness, and to motivate you to meet your goal!

Who: Everyone!

When: Sign up by January 31; challenge yourself from February 1-28; and attend our final event on March 3

Where: From the comfort of your own home; final event to be held at McKay Avenue School

1) What is the Unbreakable Challenge 2019?

The Unbreakable Challenge 2019 is an annual fundraiser hosted by medical students and residents from The University of Alberta to raise at least $500 for Osteoporosis Canada. In keeping with its vision, the event aims to (1) educate, empower, and advocate for individuals locally and across the country, and (2) promote healthy bones through strength training to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and its complications.

2) What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by bone deterioration, which increases fracture risk. In fact, 80% of all fractures in adults over 50 years-old are due to osteoporosis. These fractures not only impair quality of life, but can also be costly and deadly. 

3) What will happen during the event?

Participants of all ages will pledge in January to partake in our 1-month exercise challenge held in February. These strength- and balance-focused exercises were specifically chosen by the medical students of the University of Alberta to be safe, easy-to-learn, portable, affordable, and customizable so that anyone can participate!

In addition to social media campaigns in February for education & encouragements, participants will:

  • gauge their baseline in each exercise types (squats, biceps curls, balance)
  • use our exercise chart to set goals
  • collect donations from their supporters (who may opt to double their donation if their participant meets his/her goals)
  • challenge other participants (e.g. pledge to match each other’s donation, set goals together)

The final event will take place on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at the historic McKay Avenue School (10425 99 Ave) to celebrate achievements, exercise together, learn about osteoporosis from guest speakers, and enjoy bone-healthy snacks!
