Grandparents' Day 2018
PARENT SUPPORT SERVICES SOCIETY OF BC
Grandparents' Day 2018 - Walk, Raise Awareness & Funds that Support Families
In BC there are more than 13,000 children and youth being raised full time by their grandparents (or other relatives) because their parent are unable. The stories of these families are varied, but many of the threads are the same: loss, isolation, grief, hardship, love and determination.
These children would likely be in government care if their grandparents (or other relative) had not stepped up to the plate. Research shows that these children have better outcomes when they are raised with family.
However, to raise these kids, caregivers face legal, financial, and governmental systems that are difficult (and often expensive) to navigate. Poverty is a serious risk. They receive little to no financial support, and often spend what savings they might have on fighting for and supporting their grandkids. They lose friends. Housing rarely meet the needs of GRG families.
The grandchildren are their priority and these children need and deserve, love, stability and all the support possible to ensure they thrive.
