Parkdale Project Read's Annual Cabaret of Love
by PARKDALE PROJECT READ INC
- Tuesday, 12 June 2018 from 6:00 PM to Wednesday, 13 June 2018 12:00 AM (ADT)
- Lula Lounge 1585 Dundas Street West, Toronto, ON M6J 1T9
Join us in honouring Parkdale Project Read, a community literacy organization celebrating over 30 years of community adult literacy work in the heart of Parkdale.
Parkdale Project Read honours the vision and leadership of PPR’s founder, Dr. Rita Cox, who joined the Toronto Public Library as a children’s librarian in 1960 and became the head of the Parkdale Branch in 1974. After some parents confided that they could not read the books she was sending home with their children, Dr. Cox launched an adult literacy program in the basement of the Parkdale library, and in 1986, founded PPR as an independent community organization to meet growing demand.
At Parkdale Project Read we are committed to supporting adults to realize their learning goals in a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment. Our work is rooted in a learner-centred approach that focuses on literacy from a critical perspective, and as a tool for community building.
Parkdale Project Read’s Annual Cabaret of Love will feature dance, spoken word, music and performances representing all the diversity of Parkdale.
Heather Lash will MC the event!
This year's Cabaret of Love will feature:
- Shout Sister Choir
- Murphy Browne of Ngoma Griots in an interactive African storytelling performance
- Ms Nookie Galore, presenting an excerpt from the new play, SARAP: the FilipinX Drag Horror Cooking Show!
And many more!
There will be a DJ and dance floor starting at 9:00, so bring your boogie too.
This is a pay-what-you-can event, open to all members of our community. If you can support PPR by buying a $15 or $20 ticket in advance, or paying $20 at the door, we urge you to do that. And if dinner is in your budget, we urge you to reserve a table with Lula Lounge, 416-588-0307, as a vote of thanks to Lula for supporting this event. Lula will be giving 10% of all proceeds from food and drink to PPR, and dinner reservations guarantee you seating for the event.
So come as you are, pay what you can, have dinner if you like, and dance, dance, dance to celebrate over 30 years of community literacy in Parkdale.
Doors open at 6. Performance at 7.
