Inuit youth are facing a mental health crisis
Inuit youth are facing a mental health crisis of epidemic proportions. Nunavut has one of the world’s highest suicide rates.
The root causes of this crisis include historical and intergenerational trauma as a result of colonization and on-going marginalization, social isolation, the loss of culture and language, as well as the impact of climate change.
Inuit youth told us that they urgently need greater support and resources to improve their well-being.
Co-designing solutions with the community
SeeChange and our Inuit partners firmly believe that solutions need to be created in partnership with the community.
“The Youth in Nunavut experience intergenerational trauma, but we can help them heal, understand their history, the roots of their hurt, and the many challenges they face. They have great potential. I believe in our Youth, and they deserve our support.”
– Naomi Tatty, SeeChange Intercultural Lead, Inuit leader, Nunavut, ᒪᑯᒃᑐᓂᒃ ᒪᑭᒋᐊᖅᑎᑎᓂᖅ Guiding Youth to Thrive program
To support the well-being of young people in Nunavut and their leadership development, SeeChange is launching the Guiding Youth To Thrive multi-year Inuit-led program that combines Inuit knowledge, experience, science and art alongside Inuit expertise in health, mental health, and climate change adaptation.
The project aims to enable Inuit youth to exchange and reflect on the challenges they are facing, to network, learn about resources, and to explore tools and skills that will help them find healing, raise awareness and lead transformative initiatives in their communities.

Our Experience
For over five years, SeeChange has partnered with Inuit communities to combat the ongoing tuberculosis crisis in Nunavut through a holistic and trauma-informed approach, supporting training, awareness raising and advocacy. The Guiding Youth to Thrive project builds on our experience using a community-centered approach to address the social and ecological determinants of health.
