The Friends of Somenos campaign is to attract corporate sponsorship for our restoration work in the S' amuna/Somenos Marsh Conservation Area. We are currently undertaking a significant research and restoration work to improve water quality and to help bring Somenos back to it's historical origins as a major salmon rearing area. This work includes planting Native Species, challenging the ongoing plant and animal invasive issues, and researching water quality with the goal to reduce the phosphates entering the Somenos system which contributes significantly to the annual blue green algae issue that lowers water quality to the point that the Lake becomes lethal to young salmon. The work is being done in partnership with the local municipality and the Cowichan First Nation. In addition we are developing 'greenways' from the mountain tops to the Cowichan estuary, one of the most important waterfowl and salmon habitas on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Two other activities we do to improve the habitat and to bring awareness to the community. The first is our construction of stormwater wetlands in partnership with the local municipality to improve the water quality entering the Somenos system. The other activity is our annual WildWings Nature & Arts Festival where we raise awareness about the importance of nature of the Cowichan Valley.
