Soroptimist is an international women's organization of almost 95,000 members in about 127 countries who contribute time and financial support to community-based and international projects that benefit women and girls (and by extension, their families). Programs leading to economic and social empowerment include initiatives to overcome poverty, sex slavery and domestic violence.
Soroptimist is also a recognized NGO with a seat at the UN, providing critical leadership and a voice to issues affecting women/girls on a global scale.
For over 80 years, Soroptimist International of Toronto has sponsored or participated in many initiatives that benefit women and girls, including:
- Live Your Dream Awards: Bursaries for women who are the sole support of their families, and are endeavouring to attain a post-secondary education.
- Helen Marion Walker Scholarship:To support research into women's health at Women's College Hospital
- Other funding initiatives and/or 'lending a hand' with women centred organizations such as: 416 Community Support for Women, Street Haven, Culture Link, Elizabeth Heyward, Anduyaun, Native Women's Resource Centre, to name a few.
