In February 2016, a group of Toronto friends got together in reaction to the Syrian refugee crisis. Upon reflection we decided to make this an endeavor to help a family from anywhere who were in crisis and in need of a safe haven. At the end of April 2017, we were thrilled to be matched with a family from Eritrea (East Africa) who speak only Afar. The family consists of a mother, father and three daughters aged 6, 4 and 1. They have been in Ethiopia for the last six years in a refugee camp. They are slated to arrive in Toronto sometime between June and August 2017.
We are responsible for the family for one year. Our goal is to raise $20,000 and we have raised half of that as of the end of April 2017.
We ask that you support this effort by making a donation and inviting your friends and family to do the same. Thanks to the help of St. John’s Church York Mills, we are able to offer a tax receipt for donations of $20 or more. The church will also assist with the administration of the funds to the family once they arrive.
If you are unable to make a financial donation, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for a list of household items and clothing that we also require.
Many thanks for your help!
