Help Train Dr. Onica Higgins-Gill
St. Joseph's Health System International Outreach Program
Guyana desperately needs anesthesiologists. Without enough anesthesiologists, there cannot be surgery.
Three years ago there was not even one anesthesia resident in the whole country of Guyana. There were only four physician anesthesiologists in the entire national public health system. Anesthesia as a specialty was in grave trouble. Today, thanks to the hard work and dedication of members of the McMaster University Department of Anesthesia, there is a glimmer of hope. For the first time ever there is an Anesthesia Residency Training Program in Guyana.
In September 2016, a fourth-year anesthesia resident is coming to Hamilton from Guyana for a four month elective. What Dr. Onica Higgins-Gilll learns here will not only enhance her individual practice, but will build the future practice of anesthesia for an entire country. When she completes her program, she will will be one of the first anesthesiologists ever to be trained in Guyana. However, for this program to survive and flourish, we need your help.
It costs around $8,000 to bring Dr. Higgins-Gill to Hamilton for her training. This will pay for food, lodging, telephone service, transportation – in short everything that she will need. The International Outreach Program St. Joseph’s Health System needs your financial support.
Please support this effort. This is an opportunity for you to become directly involved in advancing anesthesia care in an entire country for generations to come.
