Young families are relying on us more than ever during this crisis. Many teen parent families regularly struggle with isolation, transportation challenges and housing and food insecurities. The pandemic and social distancing requirements have intensified these challenges.
Terra has been facing increased demand for services during COVID-19 and we are working hard to adapt our services as we navigate through this global crisis. Many of our young families have limited resources and often don’t have a support network to assist with childcare or transportation needs. During this stressful time, young parents are also experiencing increased anxiety about their financial situations and are turning to our mental health therapists for help more often than before.
The health and safety of our staff and young families remains a top priority while we support our participants. We are continuing to provide basic necessities to as many families as possible while closely monitoring the situation and adhering to Alberta Health Services’ guidelines.
Our front-line staff have begun contactless delivery of essential items such as diapers, wipes, food and cleaning supplies to ensure young families can stay safe and don’t have to take public transportation. Staff are working remotely and are now providing individual crisis support to families through phone calls, text messages and video calls instead of in-person visits. We are also exploring how to create and provide scheduled programming for families online. However, our ability to connect is limited, as some of our families are unable to afford internet access and/or cell phones.
In response to these challenges, we have created a new COVID-19 Response Fund to assist with the costs of providing additional support to families during this time, as well as securing new safety equipment and PPE (personal protective equipment) for front-line staff. Your gifts will help ensure our families can continue to access and receive crucial support safely.
Please make the most generous gift you can today. Thank you for supporting young families in our community through this crisis.
