Haiti Covid-19 Hygiene Support

In Haiti, a lack of handwashing resources (clean water, handwashing stations, sanitizer) and misinformation make an already impoverished nation most vulnerable to a coronavirus outbreak.

The Haitian population suffers high levels of diabetes and other health conditions, making residents more vulnerable to the virus, and a major coronavirus outbreak would place an unbearable strain on a collapsing healthcare system.

The Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) is the only 24/7 full-service hospital serving more than 350,000 people in Haiti’s Lower Artibonite Valley. With our support, HAS will install 300 new community handwashing stations and 139 “Tippy Tap” hands-free hand washing stations to support families in our service area. HAS also has the ability to manufacture surface disinfectant that is critically needed for COVID-19 related cleaning. HAS staff can produce 200 gallons per day of surface disinfectant, which is 2.5 times more effective at sanitizing/inactivating pathogens than chlorine/bleach. There is a shortage of bleach and all other surface sanitizers on the local market and internationally. Hospitals and health centers all over Haiti are in dire need. In addition to the hospital’s own needs, with our support HAS can supply hospitals and health centers locally and all over Haiti with high-quality cleaning solution for their facilities.
