In 2007 a group of volunteers established the Yukon Imagination Library with a goal of providing books to all preschool children living in the Yukon. There are not many bookstores in Yukon - only three for the whole territory. Our communities are far apart and books, especially books for little ones are in limited supply or available only at the public library.
Research has shown that having many books at home and reading often to your child is one of the best ways to help her/him succeed in school and in life. Since our humble beginning we have enrolled almost 65% of all of Yukon's little ones and have distributed more than 50,000 books. This year alone, we will distribute over 15,000 books.
Our goal is to reach all of Yukon's children. We want to provide them with the gift of one free book each month from birth to age 5. This way, all Yukon children will have the chance to have access to books and to build their own "Imagination Library". The wonderful books are carefully selected and are age appropriate. The books are provided by the Dollywood Foundation of Canada - a charitable foundation established in 1983 by the legendary Dolly Parton.
With a $25.00 donation you will sponsor a Yukon preschooler for one year. Every dollar you give is matched by Yukon Government.
