COVID-19 Emergency Support
THE THEMBA DEVELOPMENT PROJECT ASSOCIATION
On 5 March 2020, South Africa confirmed its first case of COVID-19. Within a matter of 21 days, active cases rose to 1,170 and the Government announced a full nation-wide lock down, enforced by the police and army. As of May 5, South Africa is now on day 40 of the lock down and has registered 7,720 COVID-19 cases with 138 deaths. (Source). This translates to 40 days of no work, no pay and inadequate food for many children and their families who live hand to mouth.
South Africa has a population of 58 million, of which more than half of the population live in poverty. It is also a high-risk country, with very high numbers of people facing underlying health issues which combined with COVID-19 could be a deadly combination. Although the Government is doing its best to put measures in place to reduce the spread of the virus and to support those in need, the scale of hunger and suffering is overwhelming, and therefore the President has made a plea to individuals throughout the country to band together to help support vulnerable people.
As an established, volunteer-run registered charity which has been working in South Africa since 2008, we are uniquely positioned to support and put desperately needed food into the hands of children, women and men who have run out of options.
This is therefore a call to action to all of our Themba supporters, new and old, to help us support the many at-risk and highly vulnerable people in our community. Without this support we face a rapidly deteriorating situation where people are facing starvation. For CAD$75/US$55, we can feed a vulnerable person for a full month. We ask for your support to donate what you can, 100% of the donations received will go directly to support the purchase of food supplies.
For photos of the current situation, please see this article of thousands waiting in one queue to collect food parcels.
Thank you very much for your generosity, donations are gladly appreciated in any currency, from any country. Canadian tax receipts will be issued for all donations.
