The Toronto Zoo is hosting its 2nd annual Polar Dip where participants will have the chance to “dip” into icy-cold waters to raise awareness for polar bear conservation! A registration fee of $50 for non-members and $40 for members is required to participate, but don’t stop there! You can continue to fundraise by collecting pledges from friends and family, or even dare them to join you by participating as part of a team! All Polar Dip participating registrants* will receive their choice** of a Toronto Zoo branded towel or a Polar Bear Buff at day-of event check in.

Monies raised through the 2020 Polar Dip will contribute to a Play & Enrichment apparatus for the Toronto Zoo Polar Bears and provide support for a research study undertaken by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF) entitled “Denning Habitat and Movements of Polar Bears – Hudson Bay Subpopulations.”The project will directly inform the identification and mapping of critical habitat for polar bears by mapping spatial patterns of polar bear denning to add to the growing dataset on polar bear on-ice movements and distribution to better understand how climate change is impacting sea-ice habitat. The maps of predicted polar bear denning habitat can be used in decision making on the location of any development and will focus on providing improved resolution to the boundary between the Western Hudson Bay and Southern Hudson Bay subpopulations and inform on the sustainability of harvest.

The Toronto Zoo’s Polar Dip will take place outside the Zoo’s Wildlife Health Centre Viewing Gallery in our dip tank, generously provided by GFL Environmental Inc. Join us for a Post-Splash Bash in our warm-up station in the Wildlife Health Centre Viewing Gallery where guests will have a chance to meet our polar bear Keepers, and find out what the Zoo is doing to help these iconic animals. You can also participate in fun and educational activities, including a silent auction!  Bag/coat check and change rooms will be available to dippers at no extra charge. Please note that all participants must sign a waiver before participating.

*excludes virtual registrants

**first come first-served and quantities of each while supplies last.

Why Support Polar Bears?

In all cases, the primary conservation concern for polar bears is habitat loss and reduced access to their seal prey due to climate change. Scientists predict that as the Arctic continues to warm, two-thirds of the world's polar bears could disappear within this century. Research also shows that hope remains if action is taken now to reduce the impacts of climate change.
