Alexandria Haber has created “a relevant expression of our upside-down world”, as Montreal Theatre Hub’s Desiree Goldwater puts it. Alice, through the experiences of its titular character, asks questions many of us don’t want to consider: how do you deal with the unexpected loss of the person you love most? When you are mired in grief, what gives you the strength to go on? Is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? Alice and the World We Live In. Parent's Night Written by George F. Walker, directed by Ian Malcolm
Parents Night (2014) Parents Night is a scathing, bold and hilarious look at the inside of an elementary school classroom. Turning his incisive eye towards the crumbling education system, Walker finds an exciting new arena for the trademark characters that only he can create — flawed, dynamic, and fully human. John, heartbroken and humiliated by a recent betrayal, arrives at his son’s classroom for parent’s night to find Nicole, an over worked educator on the brink, no longer content to dole out platitudes when it comes to her students and how certain she is that their parents are screwing them up. Enter Rosie, another parent, who exists so far outside John’s upper middle class bubble that she calls into question everything he thought he knew and believed. As the story erupts in real time, John, Rosie & Nicole find themselves unraveling. Secrets are revealed, their pre-conceptions of one another fall away, and what’s left are three damaged, fully human individuals on the brink. A teacher, trying to do her best under impossible circumstances, a father, trying not to let his anger and pain consume his son, and a mother, hoping that her own mistakes don’t spell the fate of her daughter.
