ReNew The View is a unique, large scale project to transform the boarding surrounding the construction site at 282 Ontario St. into pieces of art. The owners of the former GM lands provided the initial funding for Willow Arts Community to ReNew The View with vibrant murals painted on the blank plywood along all four streets bordering the site.
This is first and foremost a community project. The murals are being designed to celebrate what’s special about the neighbourhoods as well as recognize GM workers who lived across the city. They are being designed and painted by artists from Willow Arts, which is a peer-led arts organization for people living with mental illness/substance use in Niagara.
Painting began in mid-July 2024 on Ontario St. with an indigenous-led mural that honours the natural heritage of 12 Mile Creek and emphasizes the importance of preserving and protecting our waterways. In October 2024, a Community Paint Day created four murals on Haig St to celebrate the creative ideas of the residents of the Fitz and Haig neighbourhoods. Work will continue on Pleasant Avenue and Carlton Street in 2025
