The Summer Shakespeare project is an annual event that aims to create and mount contemporary interpretations of Shakespearean theatre featuring local talent, open rehearsals, talkbacks, Pay-What-You-Can performances, and SHSM internships to area high school students.
We partner with the Royal Botanical Gardens stunning Rock Garden (Hamilton) for location and ticketing services, and McMaster University for rehearsal space and access to suitable emerging theatre professionals.
Our larger aim is to provide paid work to talented local performers in the Burlington/Hamilton region. Our area has experienced rapid development for visual arts and music, but theatre has not kept apace with these forms. We are the only organization offering work to emerging theatre artists in our region with an aim to make a lifestyle for theatre artists more manageable. At the same time, we are offering professional calibre work to our area that is affordable, accessible, and exciting.
We hope to make the Summer Shakespeare at the RBG an established legacy in the area that can be an annual festival that continues to expand and grow every year for years to come.
