YOUTH UNLEASHING POWER: a pozitive youth symposium June 25 - 29, 2017 Cowichan Lake Outdoor Education and Conference Centre, Vancouver Island Last year, we held Canada's first national symposium for HIV and Heptatitis-C positive youth. 15 youth travelled to Victoria, BC, to share their work, their stories and their experiences. The weekend was truly transformational; beyond the enlightening presentations, the relationship building and connections that were created during the weekend will be a source of strength for years to come. Highlights for the weekend included presentations and discussions on disclosure and HIV criminalization, explorations of spirituality in the context of HIV/HCV, and creating a network for national organizing. Participants were treated to complimentary massages and acupuncture, with lots of time included to head down to the beach to relax. On Saturday evening we opened up the symposium to members of the community and welcomed a presentation of The Viral Monologues. One of the most important themes that emerged from the weekend was the power of storytelling. On the last day, participants and organizers sat down for a sharing circle to reflect on the weekend. It was a powerful experience for everyone involved, and we were thrilled to hear that everyone wanted to participate in making 2017 even larger and more powerful. We have extended the symposium by a full extra day this year, as well as chosen a location that will allow for relaxation and quiet reflection.
Our goals for this year include:
- increase participation to 25 youth from across Canada
- extend the symposium by one full day
- provide a variety of recreational outdoor activities for participants
- increase the number of presentations from 5 to 8
- provide complementary health care services to all participants
- provide travel scholarships
