ŚW̱,ȻENEṈITEL - Indigenous foods initiative

Campaign Ended May 29, 2020

During this time we are all thinking about where food comes from and how we can be supporting future food systems in this Region. Many of the local places where Indigenous peoples used to access food have been encroached on through development and make it challenging to access traditional plants and medicines.

While operating already on food sovereignty in the region, the ŚW̱,ȻENEṈITEL Indigenous Foods Initiative sprang into action last month in response to recent and future impacts of Covid-19. They opened up a granting program to support Indigenous families in planting gardens of Indigenous foods and veggies, or accessing Indigenous foods and medicines.

The seed money for the program was quickly used up and there has been more demand for the program then they are able to sustain. It has quickly become apparent that there is a growing need for lumber for garden boxes, soil, seeds and native plants for the families that applied. Over 45 families applied however the program funding was only able to support 19.

We are asking the community during this time to come together and support this program which will provide tangible materials and education to families who wish to grow or cultivate more local food and Indigenous plants and medicines. If you are unable to support financially at this time but do have access to lumber, soil, seeds, Native plants or other gardening materials, please reach out to info@indigenousfoodsinitiative.com

Donations are tax deductible and all funds raised through this online call will be managed by the program coordinators of ŚW̱,ȻENEṈITEL to ensure that they are used to directly purchase supplies for those families that applied.

We want to also thank Seeds of the Revolution (Saanich Organics), Saanich Native Plants, Metchosin Farm and Mason St. Farm for their support of this project during this time, it shows resilience when local partners come together, please do support them as well!
