Nestled on the shores of the Minas Basin, the Cheverie United Church has served as a symbol of faith, hope and community for 130 years. The church was built in 1889-1890 by local shipbuilders under the supervision of Master Builder George M. Bradshaw. Their skill and craftsmanship can be seen throughout the church reflecting the area’s ship building heritage.
Efforts have been made to maintain and renovate the building in order to better serve the community, while keeping the beauty and historical significance of the original structure intact. Despite the best efforts of the congregation, the deterioration of the exterior of the steeple, as well as continuing leaks in the roof of the church have, over the last few years, resulted in some unfortunate damage to the interior of the church.
Recognizing the need and importance of repairing and maintaining the exterior structure of the church, the congregation has decided to embark upon an ambitious project to repair the steeple and redo the roof of the church. Fueled by a strong faith and desire to preserve the church and its place in the community, we have been diligently fundraising to make The Roof and Steeple Renovation Project come to fruition.
The fundraising goal for this project is to raise $30 000 by the end of September 2020, in order to have the work completed before the upcoming hurricane season.
For generations, the Cheverie United Church has stood as a fixture in the community of Hants Shore. Even from across the Minas Basin its steeple and cross can be seen, spreading a vision of hope and welcome. Please join us in ensuring that the incredible history and craftsmanship of this church is maintained and able to serve the community and surrounding areas for generations to come.
