Did you know: Toronto continues to be the child poverty capital of Canada. It has the highest rate of low-income children around large urban Centres. Families with members who are racialized, new comers, living with disabilities or led by single parents are more likely to be living on low incomes compared to all others.
Scarborough Food Security Initiative is a community organization helping to end poverty in our neighbourhood. We are mobilizing to combat the food insecurity crisis in Scarborough.
We have been notified that due to overwhelming demand, the Bluffs Food Bank is over their capacity. We are partnering with Warden Woods Community Centre and the Daily Bread Food Bank to open a new food bank location - The Oakridge Food Bank, to ensure we have adequate service in our community and residents do not go hungry.
While we were in the process of opening the new food bank, the Coronavirus Emergency emerged. Many of the most vulnerable community members needed to self-isolate, and social distancing made it impossible for food banks to operate the traditional way. We changed our approach and now we are putting together food baskets for over 100 families per day, and volunteers are delivering them. We need your help to keep this up and ensure that families under lockdown can put food on their tables.
We are reaching out to organizations, corporations and citizens like you to help us respond to our community's desperate need. Please consider our appeal and help us make good food accessible to everyone in our community during this difficult time!
