You can almost hear it, the trembling whimper of the piglet pictured above – let’s call him Petey.
Petey was born into a crowded factory farm with 3,000 sows (mother pigs) and 4,600 pigs to be used for meat, he will spend his life in a tight, cramped space with no natural sunlight.
At just a few weeks old, Petey was torn from his mother, his tail was painfully removed, and his teeth were filed. He is fed preventive antibiotics so that he can be kept in crowded, barren conditions with other pigs without getting infections. Can you imagine what it would be like to spend a life in a grim space, where the air is thick with ammonia from excrement, waste and the high number of pigs kept in tight quarters in poor conditions?
Treated as a product, Petey will sadly never be able to play, forage, form social bonds or follow his instincts. For piglets like Petey, kept in factory farms, life begins and ends with nonstop pain, distress and suffering.
I know you’ll agree, that piglets like Petey deserve a better life.
November 28 marks Giving Tuesday, a day when we come together through acts of kindness and generosity to make our world a better place.
YOU can help create a better world for farm animals like Petey AND have double the impact when you give a gift this Giving Tuesday. Thanks to our generous match donor, your gift will be matched having double the impact for pigs and other farm animals. So, $65 becomes $130, $90 becomes $180.
Factory farms are not simply ‘bigger farms’, they are intensive production facilities where animals are treated like products, not as sentient beings. The cruelty must stop.
Petey’s story might be hard to hear, but there is hope for farm animals like him. Thanks to you and other animal lovers who stand up for them year after year, we have achieved many wins for farm animals in Canada and on a global scale.
2016
Around 63 million farm animals benefitted as our Thai office, backed by your help, persuaded Betagro, one of Thailand's largest producers, to enhance welfare for pigs and chickens. The company adopted group housing and committed to eliminating all gestation and farrowing crates by 2026.
2019
You helped transform the lives of almost eight million factory-farmed pigs in China, Thailand, Brazil and the US. Your influence enabled the shift of sows from confined, individual cages to more accommodating group housing, respecting their social and intellectual needs. Additionally, several companies began to eliminate cruel practices such as tooth clipping, tail docking and surgical castration on piglets.
2022
Supporters helped our partners, Vers un Val Vert, in Quebec to stop the development of three proposed factory farms. Thanks to their work, and because the demand for pork decreased, the proposed factory hog farms were not approved. This means thousands of pigs will not go through suffering each year.
Your gift today will have 2x the impact and help:
🐖 Move governments and industry to phase out the use of prophylactic antibiotics.
🐖 Campaign globally for improved welfare standards for all farm animals, such as enriched group housing over cages and farrowing crates, ending piglet mutilations, such as tail docking, and improved transport conditions.
🐖 Change the hearts and minds of retailers, restaurants and consumers to reduce their dependence on cheap animal products.
🐖 Urge governments to commit to policies that reduce the production and consumption of meat and dairy products.
YOU can help create better lives for farm animals by giving a gift and create a future where farm animals can have better lives.
