FOE and colleagues from 60 organizations are calling for Canada to Expand the Ban to six more single-use items and increased reusable and refillable packaging. FOE’s 11-year-old Plastic campaigner, Maya is campaigning to get rid of single-use plastic in school lunches. FOE is also advocating for strong measures in negotiations for the new Global Plastic Treaty with a focus on measures to protect our climate. Canada is still exporting plastic waste with the majority going to the US and lesser amounts directly to South Asian destinations. Under the Basel Amendment*, Canada is responsible for managing its plastic wastes which is impossible once they are shipped to the US. FOE calls for Canada to enforce its commitment to manage our own plastic waste. (*the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal)
