The Kitikmeot Heritage Society carries out its mission by:

-Collecting and archiving the oral histories of the elders.
-Preserving archaeological sites through oral history and archaeological study.
-Collecting historical information and archives.
-Using the information collected to promote and preserve Inuinnaqtun and Inuktitut
-Developing educational and learning materials. 
-Promoting and celebrating the cultures and traditions of the people.

We are an Inuit cultural heritage organization in Nunavut working to preserve and renew our distinct language, knowledge, and culture.

Inuinnaqtun—the foundation of Inuinnait culture—has less than 600 speakers remaining. The residential school experience is an intergenerational trauma that has caused language loss and cultural disconnection. 

We are facing an urgent timeframe since it is estimated that within two generations Inuinnaqtun will be extinct. 

To reverse the trend of language and knowledge loss, we're launching a Mentor-Apprentice Program in 2020—an approach that has proven successful in saving endangered languages around the world by pairing a fluent speaker with a language learner for 300 hours of immersion. Donations to the Mentor-Apprentice Program will directly support and empower Inuinnait to reclaim their language and strengthen their connection to Elders, traditional knowledge, and an Inuinnait worldview.

A gift of $100 supports a Mentor-Apprentice team to spend two hours immersed in Inuinnaqtun together.

A gift of $250 supports a Mentor-Apprentice team to spend five hours immersed in Inuinnaqtun together.

A gift of $500 supports a Mentor-Apprentice team to spend 10 hours immersed in Inuinnaqtun together.
