Food Security Initiative

The global pandemic has had a significant impact on the lives of Bequia residents. Dramatically reduced tourism to the island has resulted in shuttered homes and closed businesses, with resultant lack of employment opportunities on the island. Already poor families are going hungry and the need continues to grow.

The Bequia Mission/ Grenadines Initiative Emergency Food Security Program seeks to provide funding for identified families to purchase groceries from local vendors.

Food security issues on Bequia have been both illustrated by and personally addressed by Solana Gooding. Solana has assisted with the selection of families for voucher distribution on behalf of GI, as well as personally creating and distributing food baskets to island families. The voucher program supported by GI is being administered by a small local committee headed by Solana. This distribution system stays true to our intent to administer local programs by locals.
