The Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre in Prince George is a non-profit organization and a registered Canadian charity. We are once again gearing up for our annual Science Alliance Summer Day Camps, which run through July and August. These week-long camps teach kids aged 5-9 about science in a fun, “hands-on, minds-on” interactive setting. Through experiments, activities, games, presentations, guest speakers, field trips, our Explorers Urban Garden and more, we have gotten local kids excited about science and learning for over two decades!
We are very proud of our bursary program which, thanks to generous sponsors in our community, allows children from families in financial hardship to enjoy a week of camp. Last year, we were fortunate enough to approve nine bursaries, and all eight weeks of camp were once again filled to capacity, educating and entertaining 20 children from Monday to Friday. Outreach is also very important to us—in addition to performing science demos in elementary schools in the area, we also attended community events such as BMO Kidzart Dayz, Billy Barker Kids’ Day, Summer Fest, Canada Day, and others, reaching thousands of children in the events attended. We also run a Canada Day barbecue in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park. This event is a great opportunity to not only raise funds for our camps, but also offers additional exposure for all of our amazing sponsors.
As in the past, we are looking for community-minded individuals and businesses that would be willing to partner with us to make our camps as successful as possible. We are an independent organization governed by our Board of Trustees, funded only in part through a service contract with the Regional District. As such, we rely on corporate donations and government grants, in addition to earned revenue from facility rentals, admissions, program fees and memberships to fund our operation every year, while keeping costs affordable for people of all socio-economic realities. Your contribution will help fund bursaries, assist with our fundraising events, and purchase supplies for camp activity programming. We accept sponsorship at all levels and in all forms—gift cards, donations of supplies, discounts, or monetary donations. Bursaries start at $150, and a $500 contribution will sponsor four children to come to camp.
