"Chewie" is a yellow Labrador Retriever who was generously donated to Victim Services of Nipissing District to comfort victims of crime and tragedy in the Nipissing region.
He is a specially trained Service Dog provided by the Trauma Support K9 program and trained by the Citadel Canine Society. He is partnered with a certified K9 Handler/Trainer.
Along with supporting victims of crime and tragedy, Chewie also supports Emergency Services personnel and is an active member of the North Bay and District Critical Incident Stress Team. He is trained to be empathetic, compassionate and supportive.
While Chewie is quite happy to work for cookies, there are significant costs associated with his care. The Trauma Support K9 program was initiated in 2018 with a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. It costs approximately $7,000 per year to provide Chewie’s nutrition, veterinary care, maintain his specialized training, and transport him to work at community agencies and emergency services in the Nipissing District.
