Clean water for Indigenous communities

My mom, Janet, was a fantastic person. She took in stray animals, stray friends of mine who needed love and food. She was a nurse and cared for patients’ well-being. She was involved in raising funds for charitable campaigns.

She’s the reason I went out, as a kid, door to door collecting donations (back when that was a thing) for the Red Cross. Why my sister and I did the Run for the Cure so many years together. She encouraged me to volunteer, get fresh air and exercise, and to make a difference.

Today is the 29th anniversary of her passing. I was 17 when my mom died of cancer, but I’m so grateful I got 17 years with her. That’s all she needed to instill her love and willingness to help in me.

In her memory, and to honour her, I’m going to do something that would make her happy.

The 22nd of March will be World Water Day 2021. A day the UN focuses on the importance of fresh water, and raising awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water.

By March 22, I’d like to fundraise $6000 for Water First, a non-governmental organization in Ontario, so they can help address local water challenges in Canadian Indigenous communities through education, training and meaningful collaboration.

Water First focuses on both drinking water and environmental water concerns, as well as water science education for youth.

Janet believed in helping people, and I too feel strongly about community. Please join me in contributing to this important work ❤️
