I am a first-time Fundraiser, and hope to draw some awareness to domestic violence further exasperated by this global pandemic.
I turn 60 this year, and at this milestone in my life, I got to thinking what I have accomplished in contributed to my community: I concluded that I need to do more, and that my humanitarian efforts could improve.
I have always encouraged my (now adult) children of the importance to being kind, confident, and paying it forward. In her teenage years, my daughter Sarah got involved with Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter. I could not have been more pleased with the guidance, knowledge and mentorship she received from the team there to becoming a confident young adult. I know that I am fortunate to have such a stable, well-adjusted family household (... pets included) before and during the recent need to work remotely and socially distance ourselves.
Unfortunately, many businesses have been forced to lay off employees during the pandemic, which tragically affects many women having to be forced to stay at home more with already abusive, and now unemployed husbands. The majority of abusive cases do not get reported to authorities because many women are afraid to be harmed, or to risk harm to their children. Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter provides the grassroots resource of having a phone helpline for victimized women. In addition, this not-for-profit organization is able to provide temporary shelter or housing to abused women striving to piece back their lives.
I cannot imagine being placed in the predicament or situation of these poor women; however, I am able to try to make a small difference through supporting Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter in helping some women to change their course of life, and to offer some hope to have better, safer lives.
I am starting this Fundraising drive with an initial donation. I hope you can afford to make a contribution of any impact, whether it be by donation, or even by passing on the message of my Fundraising initiative to someone you may know.
Thank you, stay well, stay safe,
