I'm Ronnie (Scottie) Vickers. <<<< click for video>>>> Finish line!!!!
In 2005 I had back surgery and started walking for exercise on the trail system where I live, Rocky Mountain House.
5 years ago @ the age of 69, I took up Nordic Walking as part of my fitness program, which I still love.
I always love to test myself, so in:
-2016 decided to do a 1/2 marathon and entered the Oktoberfest in Red Deer, AB.......great experience!
-2017 I entered the Woody's Marathon in Red Deer, AB and did the 1/2 21 km .......it was a good challenge but left me looking for more
-2018 (age 72) I again entered Woody's but this time I was done with 1/2's and completed FULL 42KM MARATHON in 6:23
-2019 (age 73) my goal at Woody's FULL 42KM MARATHON was to beat the 2018 time; accomplished 6:03
-2020 (age 74) In January I started training Nordic Walking for Woody's yet again, but it got cancelled. I decided I didn’t want to give up all my training so decided to go it alone as it was such a worthwhile cause.
Covid-19 shut down the world and my beloved Woody's Marathon. This also meant the Red Deer Hospice Society will not be the beneficiary of donations from all the runners. This charity is near and dear to my heart because I have lost many friends and family members to cancer and I know how important it is for individuals facing end-of-life to receive the care they need to die with dignity and respect.
I was born in Harthill, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1970. My Military Service 1st Btn Kings Own Scottish Borderers (1963-1968) prepared me mentally to face any challenge that life gives me, and the mental fortitude to conquer anything.
I will do the full marathon on May 16th, 2020 in Rocky Mountain House, AB, Canada. Please help support this great cause and donate.
At 74 years of age, Covid-19 may be able to stop a Marathon, but not a Scotsman!
