It\u2019s hard to think back 20 years.\u00a0 How did CanadaHelps begin, and why?\u00a0 As a donor and a charity professional, my perspective on the CanadaHelps story has been outside looking in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"One<\/p>\n

Dotcom Child<\/h2>\n

CanadaHelps.org, as it was initially known, was a child of the late 1990s dotcom boom.\u00a0 The bust was in 2000, but the dream of the digital consumer revolution lingered into 2001.\u00a0 In Canada there were for-profit start-ups that targeted the donation space.\u00a0 I remember getting swag \u2013 a t-shirt and mouse pad \u2013 from a well-financed company that was going to charge 8.5% per transaction for its donor portal.\u00a0 It died early.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there was CanadaHelps, which in the language of moment, was an \u201corg\u201d, not a \u201ccom\u201d.\u00a0 It was charity that wanted to help other charities.\u00a0 It was the \u201clittle engine that could\u201d organization that aspired to revolutionize how donors gave to charity.\u00a0 Right from the start, cost-effective service mattered.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Donor Model<\/h2>\n

The initial vision of CanadaHelps was to help the donor to give.\u00a0 It was a \u201cbusiness to consumer\u201d model, which characterized the Dotcom era.\u00a0 And, as a donor, it was heady stuff.\u00a0 From our home computer (desktops, of course), I could give to any Canadian registered charity quickly and easily.\u00a0 Heady stuff, especially to support small charities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early years, I remember some of my charities getting funds electronically, and some by cheque.\u00a0 It was mind boggling to get emails back from the charity within 24 hours of making the gift.\u00a0 It connected donor and charity in an efficient and human way, yet it felt like space-age stuff.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years I gave more through CanadaHelps.\u00a0 As a donor, I set up an account and never lost another tax receipt.\u00a0 I binged donated on December 31.\u00a0 It all worked.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But, with my charity hat on, I heard grumbling by charities about CanadaHelps fees\u2019 and not releasing donor information.\u00a0 Donations happened to charities, not with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enabling Charities<\/h2>\n

Starting around 2013, CanadaHelps began to expand its vision and services beyond being a donor portal.\u00a0 There was a revolution in technology and strategy that focused on providing services to charities.\u00a0 Charities were no longer just recipients, they were clients.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Charities now had access to new services: embedded giving buttons, mobile-optimized giving, better and faster reports, ticketed event software, and donor relationship management software.\u00a0 It also offered research, seminars, and practical support.\u00a0 These tools were market-leading and designed with charities in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

In tech terms, CanadaHelps became a \u201cbusiness to business\u201d provider, but really it was \u201ccharity to charity\u201d.\u00a0 CanadaHelps became essential charity infrastructure.\u00a0 It\u2019s a charity, but with a tech company core.\u00a0 CanadaHelps serves more than 25,000 registered charities each year.\u00a0 It touches more charities than any other infrastructure organization in Canadian history, except the national regulator, Canada Revenue Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

New Horizons<\/h2>\n

As a donor, I was especially intrigued by the introduction of <\/span>Cause Funds<\/a><\/strong> in 2020.\u00a0 Initially, I was skeptical.\u00a0 \u201cI know charities!\u00a0 Why do I need someone to curate a thematic bundle?\u201d\u00a0 Well, the more I looked, the more I realized I had blind spots.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last December, I joined 5,100 other donors to donate $1.9 million to 70 charities through the <\/span>Black Solidarity Fund<\/strong>. <\/span><\/a>\u00a0I felt my donation had reach and impact.\u00a0 It felt like the old days of federated fundraising campaigns, but in a fundamentally new shape.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark my word.\u00a0 CanadaHelps has a proven capacity to innovate, serve and evolve.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just the kind of help charities need.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
