{"id":53379,"date":"2025-02-05T11:32:51","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T16:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.canadahelps.org\/?p=53379"},"modified":"2025-02-20T15:01:50","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T20:01:50","slug":"what-does-the-charitable-donation-extension-to-february-28-2025-mean-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadahelps.org\/en\/giving-life\/what-does-the-charitable-donation-extension-to-february-28-2025-mean-for-you\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does the Charitable Donation Extension to February 28, 2025 Mean for You?"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><br>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As CanadaHelps brought to light during the 2024 giving season, the postal strike had a profoundly negative impact on Canadian charities, disrupting mail-based fundraising for organizations across the country \u2014 at a pivotal time where they would typically raise up to 30 per cent of their annual revenues.\r\nTo mitigate the impact that the strike had on the flow of donations to charities during the critical holiday period, the Government of Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/news\/2024\/12\/government-of-canada-announces-extension-of-2024-charitable-donations-to-february-28-2025.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> their intention to amend the Income Tax Act to extend the 2024 charitable donation deadline to February 28, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\r\nFollowing that, on January 23, 2025, the Department of Finance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/news\/newsroom\/tax-tips\/tax-tips-2025\/clarifying-cra-approach-administering-proposed-tax-measure-extend-2024-charitable-donations-deadline.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a> draft income tax legislation in support of the donation extension, with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirming it will administer the proposed legislation.<br \/><br>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadahelps.org\/media\/iStock-1136375410.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.canadahelps.org\/media\/iStock-1136375410.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n<h3><b>What This Means for Canadians<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For any eligible donations made between January 1, 2025 and February 28, 2025 (see donation eligibility details below), donors will have the option of claiming the eligible amount of the gift on their 2024 income tax return. If the donation is not claimed on the 2024 return, it may still be claimed on the 2025 return \u2013 or carried forward to a later year (under the five-year carry-forward rule). However, the extension applies only to gifts made in the form of cash or cheque, credit card, money order or electronic payment.
