Charities continued to struggle, many of which have experienced significant increases in demand for services but fewer resources and funding. As we weathered the second year of a global pandemic, we came together nationwide to make a difference and showcase incredible generosity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In total, Canadians donated $465,257,445 to charities in 2021 using CanadaHelps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot we can learn from this number and how the money was raised. Let\u2019s dive into how to take advantage of the upward trend in monthly donations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Did You Know: Charity Giving Trends<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>32% of Canadians have more discretionary income amid the pandemic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Data from RBC suggests that Canadians saved a record amount in 2020, amassing an extra $280 billion.*<\/li>\n<li><strong>only 17% have donated some of the excess funds to charity<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>12% of Canadians increased their donations amid the pandemic<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>*Source: Ipso\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are concerning trends at a time when<strong>\u00a042% of charities<\/strong>** are not able to meet the increased need for their services. (<em>Source: Imagine Canada<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>You might be wondering why we start with this information? It\u2019s giving us context \u2013 Year-over-Year giving statistics may be down, but there are areas of positive growth that we need to pay attention to. Because the fact of the matter is \u2013 a lot of Canadians have extra disposable income, and there is a growing need to fulfill services. The capacity exists. The need exists \u2013 we need to do what we can to bridge that gap.<\/p>\n<p>We need to look at the areas that have seen traction (however little they may be), establish them as our big bets, and then pour some gasoline on the flames to move that engine forward.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s walk through some of the key upward trends that we\u2019ve seen at CanadaHelps and how we\u2019re helping to position charities towards leaning into these trends and getting a bigger piece of the pie here.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Trends That Can Help Shape Your 2022 Planning:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We went through the data, and put together the trends we saw emerge in 2021, that can help planning your 2022. Great news, you can get started on some right away!<\/p>\n<p>\u200d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Average Gifts:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Canadians gave on average\u00a0<strong>$442 dollars<\/strong>\u00a0using CanadaHelps, and more than 968,500 Canadians gave to over 31,700 charities.<\/p>\n<p>In total,\u00a0<strong>more than 3.2 million<\/strong>\u00a0donations were made!<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>How to Use This Data for 2022:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>Experiment with higher suggested asks<\/li>\n<li>Default your donation forms giving to monthly<\/li>\n<li>In your \u201cWays to Give\u201d section, feature higher gifts and impact statements<\/li>\n<li>In general, focus on raising your floor<\/li>\n<li>Test, iterate, try again<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u200d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Cause Funds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In total, the 35 Cause Funds available on CanadaHelps raised more than\u00a0<strong>$1.4 million to support 3,956 charities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Younger donors are emerging.<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20211208005331\/en\/As-Charities-Face-Increased-Demand-for-Services-18-of-Canadians-Reduced-Their-Donations-to-Charities\">12% of Canadians<\/a>\u00a0that have increased the amount of money they donated to charity amid the pandemic, 17% are younger Canadians (aged 18-34) \u2014 that\u2019s more than any other age group.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>How to Use This Data for 2022:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>Experiment with messaging around cause area<\/li>\n<li>Consider aligning with others in this focus area through a Cause Fund at Unite for Change<\/li>\n<li>Speak to your younger donors and ask them how they want to be involved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u200d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Events\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Canadians found ways to bring their friends, families, communities, and loved ones together to get behind a meaningful cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than $7.3 million was raised by Canadians who launched a CanadaHelps fundraiser<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re so proud of the great resilience charities and donors demonstrated during this time. Charities launched new virtual and hybrid fundraising strategies to replace in-person events and Canadians responded.
