Although challenging to measure the effectiveness of certain initiatives, we do know that through peer support, proactive and family education, the signs and symptoms following a traumatic event are lessened and the tools are put in place in order to deal with such events. We are aware that many first responders and their families who have not yet had education to assist them in a traumatic event are in need of proactive training as we see the negative results through self medication, behavioural issues in children, the overall systematic breakdown of the family structure and tragically these all too often result in suicide by First Responders. The CCISF have seen these negative effects of a traumatic event greatly lessened through the provided training, peer support and family education. The overall desired outcome is that First Responders and their families are better able to cope with the stresses caused by a traumatic event through the tools, resources, training and coping mechanisms provided to them.
