Fr Endashaw, originally from Ethiopia, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics from Addis Ababa University, a Master’s degree in International Relations and a Master’s in Business Administration. He oversees the work of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in five countries - Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan and Ethiopia- and is a global advocate for social justice and policy issues pertaining to refugees and displaced persons.
In a recent address to policy leaders in Germany, Fr Endashaw called for greater international cooperation in the development of social programming, including employment and education, in source countries of migration. He also emphasized ensuring welcome, acceptance and integration of migrants in host countries. He asserts that the international community, along with individual governments, must do more to enact the core principles of UNHCR: resettlement, repatriation and integration.
Canadian Jesuits International organizes its BEYOND THE HEADLINES series with the objective of opening public spaces for dialogue and learning on social justice issues that are largely absent from the mainstream media and need the world’s – and Canada’s – urgent attention.
Please join us on Tuesday, November 29 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm for a discussion with Fr Endashaw Debrework SJ, Regional Director for the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Eastern Africa at the St. Michael’s College Coop, 81 St. Mary St.
Fr Endashaw will speak about the complexities of accompaniment in a region that is host to more than 9 million refugees and displaced persons.
