Press Release: Redesigning How Seniors Live: a Conference on Senior Cohousing
The PEI Senior Cohousing Working Group in association with the Canadian Mental Health Association will host a conference on Senior Cohousing on May 17, 1:00-5:00 at the Murchison Centre, 17 ST Pius X Avenue, Charlottetown PEI. Registration/Check-in starting at 12:00 noon.
Senior Co-housing is intentional, collaborative housing with the following features:
- Residents actively participate in the design and operation of their neighborhood.
- Residents retain the privacy they are accustomed to through private living space and benefit from the community they seek through shared living spaces.
- Residents commit to being part of a community where co-caring provides support for all residents.
Guest speakers for the conference will be Margaret Critchlow and Dr. Lori Weeks.
Margaret Critchlow is a founding member of Harbourside Cohousing in Sooke, the first senior cohousing community in BC. Margaret will share the lessons she learned about how to create cohousing.
Dr. Lori Weeks
Dr.Lori Weeks was a co-investigator with the Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Allaince from 2005-2015. The resulting report identified cohousing as one housing option for seniors that has the potential to maintain both physical and mental health over time. Lori will share the research about the health benefits of the cohousing model.
