Aperçu

As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Maximizing the power in that statement, the “Power of 2” challenge encourages Mary Lake Guardians to recruit just two Guardians in the first 7 days to their team.

Those two supporters will then recruit two more supporters each in the following week, and so on over the course of nine weeks. As teams grow to 512 people strong, public support for Mary Lake will grow with the strength and breadth of a wide-branching tree.

Through Guardian memberships, this challenge has the potential to pay down more than $300,000 of the mortgage and move Mary Lake that much closer to its future as a public space.

On December 13, 2016 the Greater Victoria Greenbelt Society (GVGS) announced the completion of phase one of their campaign to create a 73 acre nature park, including a 7 acre lake, creeks, wetlands and surrounding natural forest land on the Mary Lake property. Bridge financing was secured through the Vancity Community Business Department. In just 6 months the GVGS raised $1.3 million in funding through generous private donations and partnerships that include the CRD. Support in principle from the Highlands District has been ongoing; once the mortgage is paid in full the Mary Lake property will become a municipal park.
