Mental health conditions affect 1 in 5 Canadian children. Suicide is now the leading cause of non-accidental death in children aged 15 – 19. Never has there been a greater need for the recognition of our children and youth at risk. Thankfully, over time, the stigma around mental illness is changing, with more children and youth seeking help.
McMaster Children’s Hospital has one of the largest Child and Youth Mental Health Programs (CYMHP) in the country. Serving a local and regional population over 1.3 million – 20% of whom are children- the CYMHP provides outpatient, inpatient, day treatment, and emergency mental health services.
The current RBC Children and Youth Mental Health Inpatient Unit is adjacent to a secure and currently unused space. Providing patients with a secure and calming outdoor space would significantly enhance the clinical care that they receive, while allowing them an opportunity to experience the outdoors. This courtyard would be part of the secure unit.
