Globally, nationally and locally, there is a quantifiable rise in Islamophobia/ homophobia/anti-Semitism/xenophobia alongside ongoing anti-Indigenous racism. While media, politicians and civic leaders focus on the events after the fact, little attention is being given to the impact this is having on the psycho-social health of society or on our cohesion as a nation. At this conference, we invite presenters from different backgrounds to have conversations with various social and community level stakeholders. The main objective and deliverable from our two-day event is to launch the “Community Action Toolkit” and continue the work that was started in 2017 to bring communities together in support of one another. The other objective is to inform, encourage empathy — not just tolerance — and to give people a voice in making a change in our society.

Now, more than ever, our communities need some direction and leadership to undertake the significant problems of hate arising in our communities. We have had our share of recent religiously, ethnically and sexuality-motivated hate events.

Our citizens are looking for advice on how to address these issues on a local level — where hate begins and where hateful actions are felt the most closely. It is imperative, especially at this time, that we provide our citizens with forums to participate in and create solutions to the epidemic of hate, which is spreading throughout our society. Simply condemning hateful events after they happen will not end the violence.
