ONE TO ONE is a unique children’s literacy program that provides one-to-one tutoring by trained volunteers to elementary school children who struggle with reading. Students are selected by their teachers because they do not qualify for school-based resource support but need a boost in their literacy skills – i.e. those children who might otherwise fall through the cracks in the system.
Typically, each student spends approximately 30 minutes two to four times a week with a volunteer tutor. ONE TO ONE provides these children with an opportunity to practice their reading in an environment where it is okay to take risks, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace.
Since 1989, ONE TO ONE Literacy volunteers have worked with over 15,000 young students. The program is available at no cost to schools or students. The ONE TO ONE Literacy Society is a registered charity and our program is completely funded by grants and private donations.
