This Spring, ECT presents The Team - the world premiere of a relevant play, ushering in a cast of five young women artists. Penned by Hamilton playwright Michael Kras, winner of the prestigious Herman Voaden National Playwriting Prize and nominated for the 2018 Tom Hendry TYA Award, The Team is a rapid-fire, heart-squeezing, fiercely funny portrait of five teenagers facing the crushing weights of expectation, grief, fear, and identity as they stand on the precipice of their uncertain futures.

Written to be relevant, accessible, and compassionate for young adult audiences, the play wrestles with the often homophobic jock culture and cyberbullying found in high schools. With your support, it can be brought to young adult populations across Niagara as one of first local professional plays to reach out to this demographic directly and the only one currently doing so.

We intend this production to highlight new, inclusive voices establishing a next wave of Niagara artists at the forefront of our cultural scene. Our goal is for local youth to recognize themselves in this production and to encourage them to become engaged and involved with theatre and ultimately inspiring the future artists and audience members in Niagara.

Why We Need Your Help

More than 80% of the costs for this project are to pay professional artists’ fees.We intend to put all donations towards supporting the cost of the industry standard contracts of five diverse emerging woman actors and six local emerging designers on The Team. ECT is one of the only contemporary theatre companies in the region who pay professional fees to artists, and the only one with a project geared towards this important young adult demographic. It’s vital we continue on this trajectory so we can retain and support emerging theatre creators and ensure a future audience for Niagara Theatre. Our goal is to help establish the next generation of professional artists and theatre audiences working and living in Niagara.
