I am Emily, a Guelph student who is looking to bring change to the community. As a part of my courses final assignment, I have been researching local food banks and initiatives and how the pandemic has impacted them. I've decided to start a small campaign to raise money and awareness of food insecurity in our community. A small donation goes a long way and sharing this page would help me reach as many people as possible!
Food insecurity may mean not knowing when your next meal will come or where it will come from, it may mean eating in rations and never leave you feeling full, or not being able to afford healthy nutritious foods while shopping. This is the reality for 13% of Ontarians. While food insecurity is usually an issue talked heavily about in reference to third world countries, it is a lot closer than many would think.
We have all struggled with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, from unemployment and school closures to not being able to spend time with friends and family to unfortunate losses of loved ones from the virus. It has taken a huge toll on many peoples financial stability and mental health, which is why many rely on food banks so they do not need to add access to healthy food to their pile of stress this pandemic has caused.
With this campaign I hope to relieve those in our community of that stress and raise awareness of how many people are really affected by food insecurity.
