After 3 wonderful years in Bogota, it's time for us to return to Canada and so, to empty our apartment. We have decided to make the sale of our belongings a fundraiser for an NGO very close to our hearts. Sombrilla is a small organization in our home city, Edmonton, Alberta. Sombrilla works in partnership with communities in Latin America to help them to achieve their goals. The people we partner with are mostly indigenous and all people living with poverty.
Th funds we raise will go to the village of Tierra Colorada in Guatemala. For the past 10 years we have partnered with the local school to provide 3 years of secondary school for the children in the community. Before the project the school only went up to grade 6. Hunger has long been a problem in the community, as the families have only small plots of land to grow some corn and beans. Normally the children receive some supplemental food at school. This year because of Covid-19 the school has been closed, and the lack of food has become more acute. We have been able to provide some emergency food for the community, but the need continues.
The principal of the school came to us with a plan to create family gardens for each family and a school garden. The goals are to provide more food for each family and, from the school garden, food that can be used to cook a nutritious snack for the children. Gardening will also be integrated into the school curriculum, so this will be an educational experience. The project will be managed by an experienced horticulturalist.
