I've set out to help Women's Habitat as I believe that there is always room to help others and that it is our purpose as people to show kindness and to aspire to leave a positive impact on another's life.
Like many, Covid and quarantine created a desire to fill my home with the fresh life of plants. My inspiration for incorporating plants into this new fundraiser was my Monstera plant. My Monstera plant was once neglected. But with a little attention, time and care, it flourished. One day, I took a cutting to propagate for a friend. It was beautiful to watch the roots and new life grow. And as I took more clippings, I noticed the mother plant starting to sprout new stems, new life.
I saw the beauty of this cycle as a parallel in helping others, specifically women and their children. Helping women that are victims of domestic abuse to have a better, healthier new life in hope for their children and the next generations to come.
Since the start of the pandemic, there has been an alarming 20% increase in calls to these shelters across the province. Women and their children have been forced to quarantine in their unsafe environments posing a danger to them on a daily basis.
Women's Habitat provides a safe shelter, counselling and support for women and their children in need. They strive to provide comfort and security through a great variety of the services they offer; from a safe place to stay, a 24 hr crisis line, outreach services and counselling. Women's Habitat has helped 74 new families within the first three months of the pandemic with their outreach services alone and their reliance continues to grow.
Raising plants is a process where detail and care is given to nurture growth and sustain a healthy life. In the same token, we can apply the same elements of care with kindness in helping women and their children flee a life of domestic abuse and violence.
Let’s take the opportunity to pay it forward by giving our plants a purpose and spreading the love and support that these women and children so need and deserve.
