About AGUR LAKE CAMP SOCIETY

The story of Agur Lake Camp started over 30 years ago when Bonnar Dowler vowed to establish a camp for children with special needs and their families. At the time Bonnar was visiting his terminally ill infant son at BC Children's Hospital and saw the many children who would never know the joy of gliding across a lake in a canoe or the wonder of a starry night in the forest.

The campground is located 20km west of Summerland British Columbia and is available to children and adults with disabilities along with their families and caregivers throughout BC. The camp offers fully furnished cabins, dry RV sites, fishing docks, paved trails, communal fire-pit, picnic pavilion and outdoor accessible washroom. The entire facility is mostly barrier free so that every camper, regardless of their needs, can enjoy nature and the outdoors.

There is a proven connection between nature & physical/mental health. There can be positive impacts on mental health issues by spending time in nature. Green space is a powerful force for good mental health & research has repeatedly proven that time outdoors reduces levels of stress, depression & anxiety.

In addition, engaging in nature and camping also has physical health benefits. Camping in a campground requires strength and dexterity that some people with disabilities can't manage. They spend many hours indoors without the ability to go outside. Families of people with disabilities & seniors want to get out in nature & our campground makes that possible. We have removed the physical barriers that make camping difficult.
