About AUTISM SERVICES INC. OF WINDSOR AND ESSEX COUNTY
Established in 1984, we are a locally run and operated charitable organization whose primary activity is a multi week summer support program that offers one-to-one care for children ages 6-21 yrs. with high needs autism. The program offers a highly structured learning environment and is designed to enhance the individual's skill through the July and August school break. In addition to classroom activities, students also participate in weekly community outings and recreational activities like swimming and bowling. The program also provides families with much needed respite. If not for this program, there would be few, if any, opportunities in the community for these students to participate and enjoy during the summer months.
ASI also operates the community's only Autism related Resource Lending Library, with over 900 items, including books, dvds, educational toys, teaching and classroom resources and specialized computer software. We work with other local agencies to assist families find the information and support they need. We partner with parent volunteers and community agencies to coordinate and host workshops on different autism topics. We host volunteer-led social groups for kids with ASD. We also partner with the Windsor Police Services in order to provide the Online Autism Registry--a resource that gives police quick access to information in an emergency situation.
ASI receives approximatley half of its funding from the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services with the remaining coming from grants, program user fees and our fundraising efforts. Ninety percent of our budget goes to Summer Program costs. Administration and fundraising account for ten percent. One hundred percent of money donated will stay in our community and go to programs that support individuals with autism and their families who live in the Windsor and Essex County area.
